David Rocastle made his debut for Leeds. Carl Shutt and David Wetherall were both denied by excellent saves before Bobby Davison scored with a diving header after Carl Shutt had had a shot parried by Kaye. Five minutes later Smith scored for Denaby to level the scores. Bobby Davison restored the Leeds lead when he took a pass from Gary Kelly to shoot on the turn and score in the thirty-ninth minute. With the Half-Time score at 2-1 Leeds made several changes for the start of the second half. Eaton took over from Scott Cam at Left Back, Damian Henderson replaced Bobby Davison at Centre Forward and Richard Hepworth replaced David Rocastle at Inside Left. It was Damian Henderson who got United's third in the forty-ninth minute, but three minutes later Kaye scored from the penalty spot to keep the margin to one. Patrick O'Connell replaced Carl Shutt at Inside Right after fifty-nine minutes. and Scott Cousin took over in goal from Mervyn Day a minute later. Damian Henderson scored his second goal after sixty-nine minutes to make the score 4-2. Steve Tobin replaced Mark Tinkler at Right Half after seventy-two minutes and Mervyn Day had a spell as a striker after he had replaced Chris Fairclough in the seventy-seventh minute, but that was the end of the scoring.
